The same principle applies to robotics. Before deploying code to a $50,000 humanoid robot, engineers create a digital twin—a virtual replica of the robot that behaves exactly like the physical version.

This lesson explores what digital twins are, why they matter, and how they form the foundation of professional robotics development.

What Is a Digital Twin?

A digital twin is a complete virtual replica of a physical system. For robots, it includes:

  1. Geometry: The exact shape and size of every link and joint
  2. Physics: Mass, inertia, friction—everything that affects how it moves
  3. Sensors: Virtual cameras, LIDAR, IMUs that simulate real sensor data
  4. Actuators: Virtual motors that respond to commands just like physical servos

Tesla is developing a humanoid robot for manufacturing tasks. Before testing on physical hardware, engineers:

When you test on physical hardware:

  • Test 2: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

  • Daily maximum: 4-5 tests per day

Simulation testing is continuous:

  • Run 1,000 tests overnight
